MICE Events in Hong Kong: Venue, Planning & Business Travel Guide

ROUND THE CLOCK, DAY AND NIGHT, Hong Kong buzzes with energy. For first-time visitors the impact is exhilarating: this restless city is distinctly Chinese yet undeniably international. Much of the population lives in densely packed Kowloon on the mainland and on even more crowded Hong Kong Island. Despite the compact urban landscape, the glittering skyline across fragrant Victoria Harbour suggests endless possibilities.

Hong Kong’s dynamism is contagious. A free-trading territory that was a British colony until 1997 and is now a Special Administrative Region of China, it remains one of the world’s leading business hubs. With world-class facilities and a wide range of attractions, Hong Kong ranks among the top MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destinations globally.

Meeting, convention and exhibition facilities in Hong Kong are exceptional. The flagship venue, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), sits on reclaimed land along the island’s waterfront. Opened in 1988 and expanded first in 1997 and again in 2009, the HKCEC now offers approximately 990,000 square feet of rentable function space. It has been voted the best convention center in Asia multiple times and, thanks to its central location, regularly hosts high-profile international events. A direct ferry connects HKCEC to Kowloon, and the center can accommodate everything from mega-events for thousands of delegates to more intimate meetings, with many rooms offering panoramic harbor views.

AsiaWorld-Expo, a 753,000-square-foot complex integrated with Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau Island, is ideal for short international events where delegates arrive and depart by air. The MTR connects the venue to downtown Hong Kong in about 28 minutes, making it convenient for fast-turnaround meetings. Although not as close to Central as some venues, AsiaWorld-Expo is near Hong Kong Disneyland and the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car, which provides scenic access to Lantau’s wooded hills.

The Kai Tak Cruise Terminal is one of Hong Kong’s newer event spaces. Built on the former runway of the old airport and designed by Foster + Partners, the terminal primarily serves cruise ships but also includes dedicated MICE facilities. Flexible indoor spaces of up to 32,000 square feet suit a variety of event formats, and a shuttle bus links the terminal to the nearest MTR station just minutes away.

Outside meeting hours, Hong Kong provides abundant leisure options that can be tailored for MICE groups. The Hong Kong Observation Wheel, a 200-foot attraction on the Central waterfront, offers private VIP gondolas with glass floors for an elevated group experience. A classic group outing is a trip to Victoria Peak via the historic Peak Tram. The tram climbs from the city to the Peak Tower, which delivers spectacular skyline views and houses attractions such as Madame Tussauds Hong Kong.

For corporate wellness and relaxation, downtown Hong Kong still offers quiet refuges. SOL Wellness on Graham Street in Central provides yoga, meditation, sound and energy therapies, Ayurvedic consultation, aromatherapy and massage. The center designs corporate wellness programs for major companies, acknowledging the importance of rest and recovery in a fast-paced urban environment.

UNIQUE VENUES

In addition to conventional meeting centers, Hong Kong features many distinctive venues. The futuristic Hong Kong Science Park, located on the coast in the New Territories between downtown Hong Kong and Shenzhen, offers a variety of spaces from a large Grand Hall to smaller meeting rooms, suitable for tech-focused conferences and corporate events.

In Central, the Police Married Quarters (PMQ), originally built in 1951 to house married police officers, has been transformed into a creative hub. PMQ now hosts design studios, food and beverage outlets, and event spaces totaling more than 17,000 square feet—an ideal setting for exhibitions, product launches and private gatherings with a trendy, local flavor.

Hong Kong’s coastline includes 263 islands, many accessible by chartered boats for day trips. Traditional junks and modern motor charters provide tailored packages for groups, with options priced by boat or per person when fully catered. Charter companies offer diverse itineraries, ranging from scenic cruises and island-hopping to catered private events aboard the vessel, giving MICE planners flexible, memorable offsite options.
