Austrian Airlines Launches Premium Economy on Long-Haul Flights

Austrian Airlines will introduce a new premium-economy class on its long-haul flights beginning March 6, 2018.

Tickets for the new travel class are already available for purchase on all long-haul routes. The airline plans to retrofit its entire long-haul fleet of 11 aircraft, and any newly acquired long-haul planes will be delivered with the premium-economy cabin installed. Retrofit work began last month on the first Boeing 767 equipped with the new seats.

“The new premium economy class is an important milestone in our strategy aimed at linking the issue of individualization with quality,” said Andreas Otto, COO of Austrian Airlines. “Customers can choose the travel class that best suits their needs — whether they prefer a cost-conscious option in economy class, want a bit more comfort and service in premium economy, or opt for the luxury of business class.”

The new premium-economy configuration will be similar to that of Austrian’s parent company, Lufthansa. On the 767-300ER aircraft the cabin will feature 18 premium-economy seats, while the larger 777-200ERs will offer 24 seats in that category.

Passengers flying in premium economy will benefit from 38 inches of legroom, an integrated footrest, and a 12-inch personal entertainment screen. Seats are equipped with power outlets and USB ports for device charging, and premium-economy travelers will also receive amenity kits to enhance their onboard comfort.

This addition expands Austrian Airlines’ product offering to better match varying passenger preferences and travel needs on long-haul services. By providing a middle option between economy and business, the airline aims to deliver improved comfort and extra services for customers seeking more than basic economy without the full investment of business-class travel.
