A first-of-its-kind spa will open in the Canadian Rockies this February. Surrounded by alpine forests and mountains, Kananaskis Nordic Spa is a modern sanctuary that offers a fresh interpretation of the hot-warm-cold-rest-repeat hydrotherapy tradition rooted in Nordic wellness.
“We wanted the spa to feel Canadian from its core,” says Jennifer Buckler, vice president of spa and development, Kananaskis Nordic Spa.
Drawing inspiration from the natural elements of the Canadian outdoors and focusing on body, mind and spirit, the spa is tailored to modern travelers seeking rejuvenation, balance and restorative experiences in a comfortable, contemporary setting.
“We’ve taken the philosophy and practices of Nordic wellness and created an original design,” Buckler explains. “This is a space that reflects not only our location but the Canadian way of life — a distinctive take on the increasingly popular Nordic spa model of repair, relaxation and rejuvenation. The Canadian attitude, together with our understanding of health and wellness, has shaped the Kananaskis Nordic Spa experience down to the smallest details.”
One notable difference from a traditional Nordic spa is the emphasis on social connection. Instead of strict silence, Kananaskis Nordic Spa incorporates a communal campfire setting within its outdoor woodland design, encouraging conversation and shared moments alongside individual restorative practices.
The Spa Lodge blends modern and rustic elements and is surrounded by hot pools, saltwater and cold plunge pools, plus three types of saunas to support the hot-warm-cold cycle central to hydrotherapy traditions. An Exfoliation Cabin, influenced by the Turkish hammam, offers additional body treatments and skin renewal.
On the main level, the Prospector Bistro provides a relaxed communal space for nourishing, health-focused meals and light fare. The third floor houses treatment rooms where an array of massage therapies and spa services are available, designed to complement the hydrotherapy circuit.
“The interior is a simple, modern twist on a chic Canadian lodge style,” Buckler says. “We’ve used rich textures, luxe fabrics and comfortable seating to give the spa a home-away-from-home atmosphere. From the beginning our goal was to update the spa experience so guests can retreat to the lodge and continue their relaxation — sink into the seating, stay a while, put your feet up, read a book, take in the view, enjoy a glass of wine or share ‘reset time’ with a friend.”
Kananaskis Nordic Spa aims to marry proven wellness practices with a distinctly Canadian sense of place: outdoor-inspired design, communal warmth and careful attention to comfort. The combination of hydrotherapy pools, varied saunas, ritual-inspired treatments and inviting communal spaces creates a full-spectrum spa experience for visitors seeking both social connection and personal restoration in the heart of the Rockies.
