Cape Elizabeth Hotel Reopens with New Summer Season Offerings

The Inn by the Sea is not closing for the winter. Instead, the renowned Cape Elizabeth luxury hotel is undergoing a thoughtful rebuild that will introduce two-bedroom cottage suites with a refreshed, contemporary coastal aesthetic, scheduled to open this summer. The exterior design will reflect classic coastal shingle architecture, while interior touches and locally sourced artwork emphasize the property’s Atlantic shoreline setting. Furnishings and finishes include milk glass accents, wicker and solid teak furniture, hardwood floors, and beadboard detailing that create a relaxed, seaside atmosphere.

Ten Cove Suites face the gardens and seaside lawn and offer partial ocean views, while two expansive 1,300-square-foot beach suites directly overlook the sea and feature fireplaces. Each suite includes a furnished deck, a fully equipped kitchen, and generous living and dining areas designed for comfort and longer stays. Located on a mile of sandy beach about seven miles south of Portland, the inn will keep its main house, dining room, lounge, and spa open through the winter months.

Guest amenities include a heated outdoor pool, dog-friendly accommodations, and three electric vehicle charging stations. Dining highlights include regional cuisine from Chef Andrew Chadwick, complemented by the Sea Glass wine cellar that holds approximately 2,500 bottles. The Inn by the Sea also emphasizes sustainable operations: its green practices have earned LEED Silver and Maine DEP Environmental Leader recognitions for environmentally conscious design and management.

The new cottage suites are intended to blend modern comforts with traditional New England coastal charm, making them suitable for families, small groups, or travelers seeking a longer, more private stay. With fully equipped kitchens and spacious common areas, the suites support flexible dining and living arrangements, while outdoor decks extend the living space to take advantage of sea breezes and views.

Throughout the property, the design strategy prioritizes local craft and materials where possible, pairing practical, durable finishes with thoughtful decorative details that reflect the coastal context. The result is a layered, welcoming environment that balances contemporary style with the timeless character of Maine’s shoreline.

Even during the rebuild, the Inn by the Sea will continue to offer signature services and facilities so guests can enjoy the scenic beachfront location, seasonal cuisine, spa treatments, and hospitality that have made the property a notable luxury destination in the region.
