Wyndham Converts Iconic Pittsburgh Landmark into New Hotel

Last month, Wyndham opened a new hotel that breathes fresh life into a local landmark. TRYP by Wyndham has transformed a historic trade school building into a destination that celebrates Lawrenceville’s art, culture and industrial roots.

The TRYP by Wyndham Pittsburgh/Lawrenceville captures the neighborhood’s industrial past while honoring its growing arts and design scene. The building was formerly the Washington Education Center, a vocational trade school that helped shape the surrounding community. Throughout the property—guestrooms, social areas, two restaurants, a coffee bar and a wine shop—visitors can still see traces of the original classrooms and the skills once taught there.

Dining options include the street-level Brick Shop and the rooftop restaurant Over Eden. Brick Shop serves contemporary American dishes and features an in-house butchery, while Over Eden focuses on fresh, shareable plates designed for enjoying with a view of the neighborhood.

Local design and hospitality teams contributed to the project. Desmone Architects, a Pittsburgh-based architecture firm, led the architectural work, and The Century Group, a hospitality company rooted in the region, helped bring the concept to life.

“As part of the Pittsburgh and Lawrenceville communities, we know how special this city is and wanted the right opportunity to welcome travelers through the eyes of locals,” said Josh Aderholt, principal at The Century Group. “As long-time partners with Wyndham, we’ve been looking for the perfect opportunity to launch a lifestyle brand and knew TRYP by Wyndham—backed by our local expertise and the support of a hospitality powerhouse like Wyndham—would thrive among the distinct culture in Lawrenceville.”

Anthony Emanuelo, brand leader for TRYP by Wyndham, added, “Lawrenceville is one of Pittsburgh’s fastest-growing neighborhoods, with a budding future in technology built upon its historic industrial past. We are committed to growing the TRYP by Wyndham brand in destinations with unique local culture for travelers to explore. Our collaboration with The Century Group, which knows Pittsburgh and has a strong passion for hospitality, empowers the hotel’s unique identity as a new landmark in Lawrenceville with a storied history all its own.”

By preserving architectural details and weaving local art and design into its public and private spaces, the TRYP by Wyndham Pittsburgh/Lawrenceville aims to be both a comfortable place to stay and a community-minded hub. Guests can expect modern amenities alongside nods to the building’s vocational past—an approach that celebrates Lawrenceville’s evolving character while honoring its legacy.
